ÖZGEM İ. ÖGE AND SEYMEN G. DENİZ WIN THE SINGLES TITLES
The Under-19 TRNC Championship organised by our federation was held on Saturday 23 September 2017. Open to athletes born between 1999 and 2003, the tournament attracted strong interest despite the heat. Matches began with an opening ceremony at 09.30 and ended with an award ceremony at 16.00. A total of 51 closely fought matches were played across 5 categories. In thrilling singles finals, Seymen G. Deniz of Near East University beat Arda Eroğlu to take the boys' title, as he had in the last four tournaments, and Özgem İ. Öge, also of Near East University, beat Eren Özuyanık to win all three tournaments she has entered. Özgem İ. Öge and Beste Aydoğan won the women's doubles and Arda Eroğlu and Süleyman Gündüz the men's doubles without losing a match. Seymen G. Deniz and Eren Özuyanık won the mixed doubles, also beating all their opponents. On points, Near East University won the team title, with the University of Kyrenia second and Akdeniz Spor Birliği third. Speaking before the award ceremony, Federation President Fırat Deniz thanked all the athletes for their outstanding performance despite the heat, the coaches who trained them and the referees who officiated throughout the championship. He also thanked the parents and fans who followed the matches from early morning to the last match, saying that every child who took part was a champion and that the real winner was Turkish Cypriot badminton.
